What is a "roughbox"?

My Grandfather's last name is Coffin. He was a railroad engineer. He grew up during the depression and in those days not everyone who died could afford a fancy casket so they were buried in a handmade wooden coffin, commonly referred to as ... a "roughbox", which was Gabo's nickname down on the yard.
